The Productive Academic Writer An Easy Guide to LowStress Prolific Writing (Audible Audio Edition) Kasthurirangan Gopalakrishnan Jack Nolan Books Reviews
The book provides easily digestible advises on academic writing. It is written in simple language and has many practical examples and advises. It has a section on self-motivation for writing with exercises which I see useful if you are not used to writing or enjoy doing other things more. I like writing so I found other sections more interesting; for example my takeaway was the practical exercises on keeping the writing process structured, concise, timely planned, and organized.
All the principles for becoming an effective and efficient writer put together in a concise and easy-to-read manner. Very practical tips, clearly coming from an experienced writer and academician. I could relate to almost all of the thought processes mentioned in the book and also the proposed solutions to overcome the shortcomings.
In the short term, it is clearly going to help me complete my PhD quickly and hopefully in becoming a successful researcher in the longer term. Strongly recommended!
I generally try to find various sources such as books, journal publications, magazine articles etc, for learning any type of skill. I have to be honest that it is hard most of the time to extract the steps that are most important to apply. The Productive Academic Writer addresses this challenge, and therefore I really like the book! The author also gives emphasis for avoiding distractions (chapter 7), which I feel is very important particularly for the present generation (with online distractions...). So the book keeps up with the current mindset of the people and strikes right at the stumbling blocks. All this is achieved in less than hundred pages from an accomplished writer!
Its a very easy read and very, a very informative book! Generally I am not so inclined to reading things rather I enjoy doing things more. But that also results in not wanting to write much and that has affected my career as well. I really liked this book because it helped me clearly identify what are the causes behind such hesitation and inertia and how to overcome them. And I feel happy the same way as we feel happy on getting a good diagnosis for any disease. I recommend this to everybody since it gives you a lot in return for a very small price. Excellent buy!!!
I was curious about this author and looked up his papers etc. He is a prolific writer himself with hundreds of published papers and several books to his credit! Well then, what he writes must be very genuine.
Writing is both challenging and rewarding, and while inspiration plays its role, for the most part writing is hard work. I have come to the end of many a writing session drained mentally and physically. I have also found many excuses to put off writing when I know I should be hard at work trying to express my ideas in a way that communicates clearly and effectively.
There are plenty books on the market telling the would-be author (academic or otherwise) how to write with clarity and grammatical precision. There are fewer books dealing with the issue of how to get motivated to write in the first place. That's why "The Productive Academic Writer" is so useful, for it provides sound advice, which, if followed, is sure to make the would-be writer more disciplined and productive.
Among the issues included in this book are How to overcome your limiting beliefs (such as perfectionism); Setting goals; Creating daily to-do lists; Eliminating distractions (especially relevant today when it's so easy to become involved in social media and other electronic outlets); Being Accountable (both to yourself and to others). The book also provides a significant number of links to various resources for writers and contains a number of bibliographical references (at the end of the relevant chapters) to related works.
Although this book is primarily written for people in academia (where one's job often depends on written productivity), anyone who writes a lot, whether as an avocation or a career, will benefit from its advice.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for writing an honest review, which I am happy to provide.
This is a great book! Easy to read; clear tips and suggestions; points to research and other helpful tools and books.
Have just put my 4th academic book under contract and found very useful, simple but solid tips in this little guide. I wish I could say that writing gets easier over time. Perhaps it does for some, but for those who prefer talking, teaching and presenting to the solitude of writing, the advice offered in this tiny book is really quite helpful. Thanks Kasthurirangan. Now enough! Gotta go write for 30.
This book is very well written and succinctly presents tips for becoming productive in writing in an easy to understand manner. I could relate personally to all the chapters in the book.
